Spinal decompression therapy is commonly used to describe a form of controlled spinal traction. It is different from surgical spinal decompression. Treatment decisions should depend on your symptoms, examination, health history, and individual goals—not the name of a device or a scan result alone.
What is spinal decompression therapy?
Non-surgical spinal decompression is a form of controlled traction that applies a gentle pulling force to the spine. It should not be confused with an operation that creates more room for spinal nerves.
At Dr. Sam's Clinic, treatment is carried out by Dr Haytham Elgenedy (Dr Sam) using manual and table-based traction. A session lasts around 30 minutes on average, depending on your case. If decompression is suitable for you, Dr Sam will recommend a plan, usually of 5, 8 or 10 sessions.

Is spinal decompression right for me?
A label such as "disc bulge," "herniation," or "sciatica" does not by itself establish that traction is the right treatment. Your symptoms and clinical findings need to be considered together. Evidence does not support promising that traction will return a disc to position or resolve sciatica. Dr Sam will discuss the available options and their limitations during the assessment.
Spinal decompression is also not suitable for everyone. It is usually avoided during pregnancy and in people with a recent spinal fracture, a spinal tumour or infection, severe osteoporosis, or a spinal fusion or implant. Dr Sam will check for these before recommending any treatment.

What happens at an assessment?
Dr Sam will ask about your symptoms, when they began, what makes them better or worse, and any treatments you have already tried. The assessment may include a physical examination. Bring any relevant MRI report or other medical records you already have.
After the assessment, you can discuss suitable care options and whether a referral or further medical evaluation is needed. An MRI is not automatically required for every person with back pain. Imaging decisions depend on the clinical situation.

Frequently asked questions
Is spinal decompression painful?
Most people feel a gentle stretch. Tell Dr Sam straight away if anything feels uncomfortable and the session will be adjusted.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your case. After your assessment, Dr Sam may recommend a plan, usually of 5, 8 or 10 sessions of around 30 minutes each.
Is it covered by insurance?
We don't offer direct billing. Depending on your plan, you may be able to claim reimbursement from your insurer, so please check your coverage with them first.
Do I need an MRI first?
Not always. Bring any reports you already have, and Dr Sam will advise whether imaging is needed for your situation.

When should I seek urgent medical assessment?
Seek urgent medical care if back pain with leg symptoms is accompanied by new bladder or bowel problems, new numbness around the groin or saddle area, or significant new neurological symptoms. Do not wait for a routine decompression appointment.
